Window Energy Ratings Explained: SHGC, U-Factor, and VT Data

Three numbers appear on every NFRC-rated window. Most spec sheets list them without explanation. Here's what they mean, how to use them, and real data from 32 products across all major window manufacturers.

The Three Ratings

U-Factor
Heat transfer rate

How fast heat moves through the window assembly. Measured in BTU/hr·ft²·°F. Lower = better insulation. Scale: 0.0–1.2. Most residential windows fall 0.17–0.50.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient

Fraction of solar radiation that enters as heat. Scale: 0–1. Lower means less solar heat gain. Hot climates want low SHGC. Cold climates may want higher SHGC for passive solar heating.

VT
Visible Transmittance

Fraction of visible light that passes through. Scale: 0–1. Higher = more natural light. Low-e coatings that reduce SHGC also reduce VT — there's a tradeoff. Most windows: 0.33–0.48.

Higher = more light

All ratings are whole-window values. The NFRC rates the entire assembly — glass, frame, spacers, and edge. Center-of-glass values (which manufacturers sometimes quote separately) are always better than whole-window values. When comparing products, use whole-window NFRC values only.

U-Factor: What the Numbers Mean

The best U-factors in the database — 0.17–0.24 — come from triple-pane units with wood/aluminum frames. These are also the most expensive products: $900–$3,500/unit. The Andersen E-Series Triple at U-0.17 is the best performer in the dataset.

Double-pane Low-E units cluster at U-0.26–0.30. Most residential projects land here. ENERGY STAR Northern climate zone requires U-0.27 or lower; South-Central and Southern zones allow up to U-0.40. Every window in this dataset qualifies for at least one ENERGY STAR climate zone — most qualify for Northern.

Triple vs. double pane: Triple-pane adds another glass layer and gas fill, dropping U-factor from ~0.27 to ~0.19–0.22. The performance gap matters most in very cold climates (Zone 6–8). In Zones 3–5, a well-specified double-pane often pencils out better on cost vs. energy savings.

SHGC: Climate-Dependent Selection

SHGC is where most buyers get the selection backward. The instinct is "lower is better" because it means less heat gain. But in cold climates, solar gain through south-facing windows is a free heat source in winter. In those climates, a higher SHGC (0.30+) on south-facing windows is energy-efficient.

The general guidance:

VT: The Tradeoff with SHGC

Every Low-e coating that reduces SHGC also reduces VT — the coating reflects solar heat but also blocks some visible light. In this dataset, the lowest-SHGC windows (triple-pane units at 0.19–0.23) also have the lowest VT (0.33–0.38). The vinyl windows at 0.28–0.30 SHGC have VT of 0.42–0.48 — significantly more visible light.

For daylit spaces (living rooms, offices, south-facing rooms where occupants want natural light), prioritize VT ≥ 0.40 if possible. The Simonton Impressions at VT 0.45 and Alside Mezzo at 0.44 are strong value options for this use case.

Frame Material Effect on U-Factor

Composite (Fibrex, V/W) 0.26 – 0.30 Mid-range performance. Andersen Fibrex is proprietary composite wood/PVC.
Vinyl 0.28 – 0.32 Good insulator at low cost. Multi-chamber frames are better than single-chamber. Best value tier.
